 SAC FONE 1998

OH5NQ is a stn where you always start a contest by building everything
from 'scratch'. OH6EI had dismantled his SAC CW operating position -
so there I was at 12 GMT with a PC, cables, boxes, radios, tables....
 80 meter 2-el wirebeam needed a tuning/phasing box - I started out
 by doing that first....

2 minutes into the contest I had managed to connect everything and
the operating position was 'ready' to go...

The start was slow - I had to familiarize myself with all the new
pwr-split-, TX1/2-, antenna-swith etc. boxes. The old 386 was seemingly
slow in logging a qso. TR processed a call for 3-4 seconds after
pressing enter the first time?! I had thought TR works with slower
processors and disks- it does yes, but with a s..l..o..w speed.

After a slow start came the night.....if it hadn't been for Taneli,
OH7MA who came to cook coffee for me, I would have given up. I wonder
how hard the aurora hit OZs and SM7s, not mentioning SM2s & OH8s?

 80: DX1S, VK5RO, EA8, no JA or W/VE, FR5HR had heard OH1MA and OH5NQ
on this band but 'You can't hear anything there?' - he said.
40: no W/VE but other than that went well., in the morning scandinavian
stations were all S9+, but nothing else heard through aurora.
 20: just 23 W's.
 15:
10: I guess being on 10/15 the first evening didn't pay off.

Two radio operating for the first time - I shall improve my
skills in that. That's the way to go! Thanks to OH6EI for
making 2-radio operating possible. Never before has my mult-
chasing been as effective as in SAC 1998.
