1999 RTTY Roundup
I recovered enough from the New Year's Party (we played Prince's "1999" over &
over) to join my pals W4CC and K4MA for the traditional New Year's Contest,
the RTTY Roundup. This was our best year ever, due to the improved high band
propagation and possibly more activity from outside the US. We used packet
spotting for the first time, but that was disappointing. There were a few
mults worked that way but it was probably more trouble than it's worth in this
contest.
We were planning to use the club call W4FNC, but had to ditch that plan at the
last minute when I discovered that the copy protection in WF1B RTTY 4.0 only
allows use by the call it's assigned to. I hope that I can change calls used
in the future with a message to Ray. I just didn't have time. I was in my
normal pre-contest planning mode. This consists of about 3 minutes of deciding
which type of junk food I'll be consuming, and 2 minutes of turning stuff on
to make sure all the smoke is out of it from the last contest!
We even set up a second radio (no amp) this year. That was also more trouble
than it's worth with this 6 band changes/per hour rule. Total QSOs on second
radio - a whopping 7.
The Results:
1156 Qs x 56 states/provinces x 59 countries = 132,940
New Division record, and new multiop record I believe, although I'm sure some
of the guys who actually knew what they were doing beat us...
A good time was had by all
Happy New Year,
Will AA4NC / W4MR
