Personal Best. Rotor Stuck SE due to ice storm (bummer!). Got off
to a slow start, being a little bummed out & messing with the
rotor control. I knew it really wouldn't be a big deal, but it
caught me by surprise (tried it 15 mins before the contest) and
sure made me re-think my operating plan. Took breaks earlier
when rates started falling off. Could only deliver 65 watts to
the tuner, so I decided to add the amp and at least have the
full 100 watts going out the hole to the Southeast. Little did
I remember to review the rules to discover that the limit was
150W until after the contest and the 3830 postings started to
roll in. Alternating between the Omni and the IC-735 for running
worked well and is represented in the higher 2nd radio Q count.
Began a break at 21:55 and was checking out where the system
losses were coming from when I "accidentally" heard a "KY" call
coming through the speaker, which turned out the be WL7KY on 10M
very strong. Well, since I was "listening", I decided to void
the break and pick up the new mult. Continued a little while
longer, then started another break and left the room. Had an
EA3 call me on 40 meters and he wanted to tell me his life
story. After what seemed like an eternity (only 3 minutes) I
gracefully ended the "QSO" and continued on with the game. The
remainder of the contest got better as I moved on down to the
lower bands where I knew I would be strong. Rates improved and
even though the QRN was bad, my best sustained hour of 99 was
done on 80 Meters! (Remember, I felt loud, therefore I was loud!)
I learn something each time and this is a most challenging
contest with all of the fine competition out there. Every
minute counts, else you get passed on by. TCG had another
record number of players and teams, which really makes it even
more fun, knowing that the whole group is out there giving it
their best. I'll be back, more prepared and looking to improve
once again.
"You live and you learn, and you get iced on every now & then!"
Viva TCG!!! ... I think I need bigger aluminum....
