Here are some more responses to my tongue in cheek question:
"Out of curiousity: where do the very loud Italians get all those "300 watt"
amps, and the English the "400 watt" amps? (hi)"
8) "Another possibility is that the 300 W Italian amp is simply a slightly
souped up version of the 200 W amps so many US amateurs use on 30 M."
9)"During the contest I overheard an EI8 stating that their legal limit is
100 watts. He said " so that is what I have to SAY" . He strongly
emphasized the word SAY. This was several hours after their sunset and
I could just barely hear the DL's running their KW's......
Anyone know how much a 4CX1,000,000 would cost? sorry, just thinking
out loud..... :-)"
10) "Here you can see my 2KW Italian linear amplifier:

11) "After one contest, my friend Mike and I noted an Italian
station with a very strong signal listed a "Lampudesa 300W" amplifier.
After much discussion, we determined that "300W" referred to the filament
power...."
12) "When I first operated from the UK in 1977, a local G reminded me of
what Don Miller had called the 30L1 he used on a UK island in the Pacific.
Don explained to the local communications inspector that it was an "active
antenna tuner". Alpha, Henry, etc. make similar items for the UK market."
