Comments: Haven't operated a serious WPX for a long time,
but was really lookingforward to this since 15M had been so
hot lately. I did a little planning getting ready for this one,
including running off about 1500 Q's since Tuesday on 15M
getting used to using KX8R, and looking over the ratesheet of
WE9V when he broke the record last year. I also determined
what portion of the 36 hours I would operate. Unlike last year,
when Chad only operated 30 hours, this year it was open around
the clock!
I started off pretty well, and when I closed down at 0501Z I had
490 Q's in the log. I was still wired and came down to the shack
about an hour later and was drawn back in because of hearing the
band still open and worked another six, including some EU, but
figured that my time would be better spent using my operating time
more wisely. At this point I was 66 Q's ahead of WE9V's record.
I made sure that I was in the band early enough and worked YL4U
at 1015Z. Rate to EU was very good, and excellent to Asia. I stayed
at 21200.8 most of the time, and only had K6LL try to get below me,
and he did it a number of times, "just to yank my chain" he said. I
knocked off at 0448Z, with 2253 Q's, over 450 Q's ahead of WE9V's
pace of last year. I left feeling pretty good and figured I'd not stay on
much later, so that I would save my op-time for the Sunday. In
retrospect, knowing what would happen on Sunday I should have
stayed longer.
Sunday started off a little slower than I would have thought, and kept
losing ground to WE9V (how did he have hours of 120, 125 on Sunday!)
Finally hit the wall when it seemed everyone went to 10M, (I tuned 10M
on the second radio and heard NT1N CQing at 28.940!), and decided to
take an offtime from 1427-1529Z. Rates continued to be very slow and I
knew my goal of breaking 3000 Q's was in jepardy. Kept kicking myself
for not running EU past 0500Z. I ended up turning the lower antenna
out west just to see if I could scare up some more stateside mults. Ended
with only 678 second day Q's!
Fell short of my goal of 3500 Q's and 8M, but just could seem to get
anything going on Sunday. Intresting to note that WE9V worked over
500 stateside, to my 273. I wonder what happened to me there?
All in all it was a great ride!
