Comments:
We had planned to use our WPX club call (NZ8O), but I was blackmailed by KT8X
who said he would come and do 15M for us if we'd use his call.
What great conditions! Both 10M and 15M were runnable well after dark. There
were signals on 15M all night but for stretches nothing was runnable. We
worked several EU in the middle of Friday night peaking due south, and several
asked what direction we were beaming.
Perhaps to be expected, the low bands were not very good - our totals on 160M, 80M, and 40M were all down from last year. EU on 40 was significantly better
on Friday night than Saturday. We seemed to have better than average success
CQing JA on 40M both mornings, which can be hard to do from out here.
Activity seemed tremendous, with the high bands a seemingly endless supply of
stations to work. Once again, the JA activity was outstanding from our
viewpoint. Congratulations and thanks to our JA competitors!
Only two technical problems during the weekend. W8MJ spent the first two hours
on 20M complaining about the receiver in the IC-781 when I discovered the power
was off to the ICE active rx splitter. Sigs were a lot better with power on.
Also, the week before the rotator under the top 20M yagi sheared its mounting bolts and the temporary lashup for the contest weekend would drift in the wind.
It was *very* windy here this weekend, so every couple of hours someone would
have to go outside to check the direction and post a "correction factor" at the
control box.
My thanks go to our operators this weekend who put lots of long hours in the
operating chairs.
73,
Dave, K8CC
