Comments:
If anyone ever tells you that 24 hours is a better length for
a DX contest than 48, just tell them to look up the scores
of the 2001 CQ WW CW contest. I don't think many of us had
much difficulty staying awake for Sunday's rate-fest on the
high bands.
Thanks to all of those who travel and go through such lengths
to get on the air for this, the biggest and best CW contest of
the year. The activity levels in this contest are simply
amazing, and it was exciting to see new multipliers constantly
showing up around every corner.
Propagation was so bad early Saturday morning that it was
almost a throwback to what I remember of contesting in the
mid-1970's, when the station hardware was a lot more modest.
Everything was coming in on one beam heading - south! 40
meters in the wee hours was terrible here, with huge pileups
on anything that was audible, non-stop calling, infrequent ID-ing,
and general frustration. But contesting is about competition,
so you gotta slog it out, good or bad.
The W9RE station continues to improve every year, even with two
lightning hits this summer that would have put any other ham
out of business for a lot longer than it did. Thanks to Mike
and his family for putting up with me again, and I hope to see
everyone in the next big one.
