FT-817, 5 watts, to a top end-fed 73-foot Inverted-L 24-ga stealth antenna up
40 feet in trees adjacent to I-75 in downtown Atlanta. WriteLog (manual mode).
First time in a NA Sprint. Great tongue-twister. Felt better when I heard
others fumbling with the two-callsign rule. Took about 30 Q's before I felt
comfortable with the callsign and QSY rules.
Bill W4AN told me, "It is a fast paced contest that can be a little
intimidating the first time out. But it is the funnest contest going." Well,
Bill...you were right. No way to get bored or doze in this contest. Sure glad I
was able to practice with the SSB Sprint before jumping into the CW Sprint.
W4AN also provided this URL which was very helpful: "The Sprint Survival Web
Page" <http://n6tr.jzap.com/sprint.html> (Thanks, Tree, for this excellent
tutorial.)
Self-evaluation: (1) Must use headset-mic when operating phone contests; (2)
Radio and computer must be closer to each other so that the operator can see
both resources simultaneously. Current setup requires op to turn 90 degrees to
operate the radio or computer.
Thanks to all the contesters who really TOOK THE TIME to complete the exchanges
with me and other newbies. If the QSO could not be completed because of QRM or
condx, these contesters ended the QSO courteously, usually with an explanation,
and asked us to "try again later."
See you all in the CW Sprint!
