Comments:

This was one of the most fun operations we've had at Radio Oakley, considering
that one week ago, there were no plans for a major multi effort. Many of the
heavy hitters on our team were not available, so the first plan was for WA6O
to do a SOAB. When I learned that K3EST would interrupt his honeymoon to
operate, and K6RC (President of River City Contesters) was available, I decided
M2 might be a way to go. After reviewing the rules, I said nuts to the MS and
M2 restrictions, let's just go MM with a small crew of old-timers. So we four,
with an average age around 60, went at it with 4 radios, and had a good time.
K3EST (Bob the Master), K6RC (SO3R Dave), and WA6O (Iron Mike) each put in
about 44 hours. I only did about 38 hours due to having a jazz gig Saturday
night (It's hard to find a sub for a band-leader!).

What is SO3R? When the other three ops crashed early Sunday AM, K6RC was
operating three rigs, rolling his chair between the 80-40-20 positions, trying
to keep two headsets anchored on his head and listening to the third radio by
speaker. A better nickname would be Dave- the juggler. BTW, he's also a
musician.

We had a solid network on CT this time, and had pretty good local packet
connection success. Here in the boondocks I do not have a reliable,
uninterrupted internet connection for 48 hours - guess I'll have to invest in
two way satellite service. Evidently, most of the feeds to UHF packet were
down, so there was not much input, other than from W6OAT, K6NO, and a few
other NORCAL actives. We had many small problems: loss of three antenna
rotator indicators, failure of a stackmatch transformer, smoke from an unknown
source in the shack, rain static on Sunday AM, etc. But we survived it all
and managed to exceed all previous W6 MM scores by a small margin. ARRL
log-checking will determine the final score, but it's our own record at stake.
East coasters and black holers are invited to visit us and see what its like on
the left coast - but wait 'til the next sunspot minimum!

Thanks to station manager K6AW (who was OH0R this weekend) for setting up the
network and brewing a vat of excellent BIG BEAN soup which fed the crew all
weekend. Also tnx to the DX for the Qs, we will be slightly more serious on
SSB in two weeks.
