Thanks to Randy, Connie and Andrew Thompson for having me at their house
again this year. Greatly appreciated the opportunity to come up there
for ARRL DX CW for the 2nd year in a row.
Last year I wrote a long summary article of operating at Randy's - not
going to do that this time, just touch on a few points of interest (or
at least that I thought were kinda interesting, this sort of thing is
always in the eye of the beholder).
- Last year I had 4520/464 at the end. This year 7 more contacts and
1 more mult. 179 less Q's on 40 this time, but 143 more on 10.
- Band conditions were awesome. 20 meters was open literally for 48
straight hours to Europe with the edge going to the first day.
- Last year, I went 48 straight and was a total incoherent wreck at
the end of the contest. This year, I promised myself I would do
better if I took between 90 mins and 3 hours of nap on Saturday
night. On the fly, I decided I would hate myself if I didn't go
all the way and ended up going the whole 48. I handled it better
this time, and felt better, but was mentally losing it the last
three hours of the contest (see rate sheet). I got really confused
over what buttons to push on the computer keyboard, was trying to
remember what I was supposed to be doing on the 2nd radio and at
one point made several band and radio changes in a row without
doing anything productive. I also suspect that I didn't log some
contacts in the final hour but I'm really not sure. Check this
beauty of a mental crash log snippet at the end:

Great job, kid. You want fries with that shake?
- The high point of the contest was finding a run frequency
that was completely clear on 10 meters on Saturday morning
and being able to crank the rate up as fast as I could copy
callsigns for the next 3 or 4 hours. No frequency fighting,
no trying to edge out an adjacent station, nothing but copying
callsigns as fast as I could. Didn't touch anything on the
rigs but the RIT for hours and that was only to get the off
freq callers into the log. Contester 'groove'. I went 16
consecutive 100+ QSO hours in that stretch.
