Comments:
Lots of fun again! My second year as SOAB Low Power from the Turks and Caicos
Islands. This time I was more prepared both mentally and physically but less
prepared equipment-wise. I spent the days prior to the contest getting set for
single op - two radio operation. I neglected to bring one of the cables
necessary for audio / CW switching and had to improvise. I can't tell you how
hard it is to find an eight pin DIN connector on a small island! I found every
electronics / computer / music store on Providenciales! Eventually, I had to
butcher another cable for the connector but finally got everything working.
The contest itself seems to have had great conditions across all the bands.
The low bands in particular were atmospherically quiet and I picked up many
more mults on 160 and 80 than last year.
Friday night and Saturday during the day were good but Sunday was a big
disappointment. It wasn't until the last three hours that conditions appeared
to pick up for me.
I tried to go the whole contest without sleeping but couldn't quite make it. I
napped early Sunday morning about 3 hours. I found myself falling asleep
between QSO's late Saturday night - at one point pressing the 'L' key until the
computer crashed!
I did especially well on multipliers this year - scoring 340 out of a possible
378 maximum (63 per band for DX stations maximum). This was an increase of 12
mults over last year - not insignificant - and was enough to keep my score
around my 2nd place world showing last year. It remains to be seen if this
will hold up for any placing this year. However I did have fun and enjoyed
working all the fine CW ops in the US and Canada. Thanks to all, especially
for all the QSY's to other bands for needed mults! Big thanks to Diane K2DO
for all her support and to Jody VP5JM for the use of her station.
