Was this the perfect contest?
Everything worked: the radios radiated, rotators rotated,
propagation propagated, the operator operated.
As we have heard from so many of the participants at the
Olympic Games, even if I didn't win my event, I was
fully satisfied with my performance and had nothing
left over after the event.
My score is up 30% when the overall level of top stations'
scores appear to be similar to last year's +/- 10%. I passed
a number of stations which placed higher last year, but
there always seems to be another contestant entering! So far,
N2NT's station in NJ and K7SV in VA have reported slightly
higher scores on the 3830 reflector.
This year I decided to glue myself to the chair and force
myself to run stations to try to overcome the locational
disadvantage. Still, the vast majority of my
multipliers (286 of 371) came from searching and pouncing
on the second radio. As part of my new running strategy,
I spent less time on 160-80-40 meters because the contacts
came less frequently. If I couldn't work the station on
the first call I moved on. The primary use of the
extra time was spent CQing on 10 meters.
The problems this year were minor. The metal folding chair
I use becomes very uncomforable if one plans on spending
48 hours in it. I took 3.5 hours off Sunday monrning for
a nap and breakfast, only to find that the lights in the
shack would not come on. I operated all day Sunday with
a couple of small lamps awkwardly placed to minimize glare.
Changes in the station from last year's contest included
a second 20/40 meter beam on a TIC ring rotor at 61' and
placing the bottom 10/15 on a TIC ring at 41'. I added
two 500' beverages (NE and SE) which made S&Ping on 160
easier on the ears.
The countries most frequently represented in my log were
UA (274 Q), JA (270 Q), DL (256 Q), and OK (196 Q). 75%
of my contacts were with European stations. 139 Qs were
with QRP stations. TR shows that I mad 274 band changes.
I even am looking forward to the fone contest!
