Comments:
This the very first 160 m PHONE contest I have done myself (have had a number
of guest operators over the years though), as I like CW a lot better… But it
was really good. Worked almost as many Ws as during the CW weekend one months
ago (181 NA stations on SSB, and about 250 on CW), which was really a surprise.
The first night was excellent (80 NA-stations) and the second even better,
although the band waited long to open up. KV0Q was the most Westerly station
worked exactly at my sunrise the first day. Not too much QRM problems, which
was also a surprise, just a few “fights” to keep my frequency. I had the
biggest arguments with SM6WQB who came 1500 Hz below me (with a S9+30 signal)
and thought that this was enough separation. He flatly refused to move a couple
100 Hz. A call to remember… Gosh, I probably must have too clan a signal that
they are not bothered with my signal this close (FT1000 MP MK V, running only
60 Watt out)… Really a surprise that the score is a high as the two stop
scores in 1995 and 1996 when just under 400 K-points ware made by my guest
operators, but that was during the dip in the sunspot cycle. A great
experience altogether. The DX window and the band plan is a different story.
The DX window can accommodate 2 or 3 SSB signals, and if we must stay above
1843 to transmit on SSB, then we have 7 KHz to operate in for many European
countries when the band limit (top) is 1850 KHz…Draw your own conclusions.
73 and CU next year, John, ON4UN
