Comments:
First time in this contest. Special thanks to Bert VE3QAA for the use of his
antenna farm and amp!
Station:
Yaesu FT-900 (and FT-757GX after FT-900 quit)
Alpha 87
100 ft vertical c/w 120 radials and a parasitic element tuned as a reflector
(NE) or as a driector (SW) or untuned for omni.
Was really amazed at the performance of Bert's vertical. Really nice to have a
160M antenna with gain and front-to-back! Made a big difference switching in
the NE reflector in hearing/working Europe and cutting down QRM from USA.
Highlights:
- OT2T saying I was first NA he worked (at 2245Z)
- being called by N7DF/TI9 on Cocos and OY9JD
- worked all mainland US states (did not work DC though)
Low-Lights:
- not being able to work European Mult's in DX Window due to USA stations
CQ'ing. Could hear them calling CQ under the USA stations! This includes TA and
EI Stations!
- Where was DC? Was there any operation from there?
- No Pacific. Did not hear KH6 or KL7
- missed a number of VE i.e. VY0, VY1, VY2, VO2 and VE8
Looking forward to next year. Bert VE3QAA promises two more switchable
parasitic elements and 6 two wire beverages!
