Comments:
Low activity, poor condx and poor health on my end made for a slow VHF SS this
time. Condx were clearly below normal for most of the contest as the beacons
were all below normal. There was a pickup late Sunday afternoon and actually a
short while where microwave sigs were above average, but that was about it on 2
and up. Because of a herniated disk in my neck, I needed and intended to get
more rest than usual. That wasn't a problem as there was so little activity it
didn't pay to stay on late. I got up later than usual and found myself all
alone on 2 meters Sunday am. Not a single station on - had to check the beacons
to make sure I still had rx! Didn't do too well with the rovers this time.
That's a big variable for my score and this time it didn't work out. Also,
heard a lot more than I worked on 3.4 g this time. Seems like everyone else got
those surplus 40 w amps on and were very loud for me. But 6 stations I could
hear well couldn't hear me. First time that's happened. At 8 points a pop guess
I'll have to find a way to get one of those amps, hi! One advantage of the
extra sleep was that I wasn't tired at all throughout the contest.
While 6 was a big disappointment for everyone after all the Eu openings, it was
still the most interesting band during the contest. With everyone indoors with
the snow, football games etc and the hope for a big F2 opening , I stayed off
6 more than ever before to spare the neighborhood. In my 5.5 hours on 6 I fund
much better runs than on 2. In fact, activity Sunday am was amazing as everyone
waited (in vain) for the Eu opening. At one point I tuned from .080 on cw all
the way past .200 and found continual activity even WITHOUT an opening! Of
course later in the morning we had decent backscatter and the pileup on the TF
(like P3 on 20 I'd say!). Then had some fun working about 50 q's out to W6/7
and VE7. Nothing like the openings we had a few weeks back but still a lot of
fun. Didn't get on 6 after 2 pm Sunday except when asked so missed the late Es
to the midwest.
Thanks for the q's and CU in June! 73, Jeff K1TEO
