Comments:
Had a great trip visiting my "adopted dad" up in CT. I met him while attending
submarine school back in '79 as an Ensign and have remained close to him and his
xyl ever since. He's been "under the weather" lately (3rd bout with cancer, just
had surgery to remove a cancerous kidney) but one would not know it. He's 88 and
a little slower in step (but still sharp as a whip!). He is still active most
days in a 20M net and Navy MARS.
A few years back, the NCJ ran a series "Where Are They Now" and the author
reported that W1ZM was a SK. Well Jerry was pretty surprised to hear that when I
broke the news to him! W1ZM was a real powerhouse station back in the 70's and
80's when K1ZM was the main op and tower climber. There are quite a few WAE
Continental winner plaques on the walls but sure didn't win this one! The
multiple towers and monoband stacks are gone and all that remains is a lone
tribander and dipoles but, as in real estate, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!
Arrived there Thursday and we set up the station using an old TS940. Jerry's
trusted "Blue Goose" HB 4-1000 amp failed so a modified 30L1 Collins amp running
about 700W (40M) and an SB220 about 700-1000W(80/20/15/10) were placed into
service. Just SO1R/no packet. I have always enjoyed WAE but never had done it
full-bore and sure found it a bit different in CT than from the "gray-hole" of
mid-TN. QRN was pretty bad both nites but had better luck on 80M Saturday than
Friday. Messed up my off-time strategy to catch a brief EU opening on 10M Sunday
mid-day so total time was about 33 hours. Heard a good many of my TCG buddies
including W4NZ, Wo4o, KA1DWX, W9WI with a whopping sig on 20M, and K4LTA running
a pile on 40M. It was a fun time, and a great visit with some wonderful people
but sadly, had to leave on Tuesday to get back to work. Hope to do it again!
tnx Jerry and Ellie! 73, Mark K0EJ
