Comments:
Wow! Condx were sure a pleasant surprise, considering the sunspots are supposed
to be going away and the lousy condx from solar flares in the last 2 months.
When I started reviewing old rate sheets a few weeks ago, I was expecting it to
be similar to 1998, with SF below 100, not in the 160 range.
The contest started while it was raining very hard. The good news is the rain
got rid of my power line noise (which starts every year in early November - must
be temp related) for most of the contest. The semi-bad news is it caused 20
over S9 rain static on 40. I used the Beverage on 40 for the first 2 hours,
which helped very much. After the rain stopped, it was very windy, gusting to
40 mph. I couldn't turn my top antennas (TH7/402-CD) for a while, and used a
low TH7 for stuff to the west. Other than that, every worked - I've never had
anything blow up during a contest.
Bottom line, I had 650 more QSOs than last year. In the first 24 hours, I was
up 500 QSOs! The mults were down quite a bit, though. Never worked (or heard)
Europe on 160. Was I listening at the wrong time, or did I just give up in
digust at how big the pileups were? (see next paragraph)
Take a look at N2NL's write-up and comments about packet. Though I am an SOA
op, I agree with what he says. Packet seems to bring out the worst in people.
If you're just DXing, fine. But if you're contesting, packet is LOWERING your
score, wasting so much time jumping from pileup to pileup, for even non-rare
stations. The whole weekend, I can count on one hand the number of times I
heard KI1G and K3WW in packet pileups - that should tell you something. There
are a number of stations who consistently beat me in the pileups, but never have
competitive scores. Why? Cuz they're wasting so much time in packet pileups
instead of running. There were 2 stations (both N2 1x2's) who had a knack for
covering the DX station's reply every time I heard them. So annoying! 'Nuff said
about that...
When I saw K3WW's score posted last night, I grinned and thought to myself I
won a second year. Then, this morning, I saw KI1G's score. Outstanding job,
