Comments:
Score way down from last year, thanks to conditions and Murphy.
Murph struck twice on 20 meters. First, an hour or so into the contest, the
rotor on the high 20m yagi (the only one in the 3-stack that turns) became stuck
due South. Later in the night I pulled on my boots and went through the snow to
connections near the base of the tower, where the starting capacitor is located.
It took several trips back and forth with flashlight and VOM, but finally
determined the slip-on connections of the capacitor were corroded. Soldered some
wires on a replacement and spliced in to get the rotor going before the morning
run to Eu.
Then the 20-meter monoband amp quit. No arcing, no noise, just saw the output
drop to zero on the wattmeter in mid-QSO, and turned to see the 4-400s glowing
very red. Since working on this amp entails shutting down the entire rack -- and
the monoband amps for the other bands -- I chose to keep going with low power on
20. After getting some sleep Saturday night, and when the rates dwindled to
single-digits around 0930z, I spent an hour swapping tubes and trying to debug
to no avail, so we continued barefoot the rest of the contest.
This was the first contest where I've had both the 20 meter and 15 meter stacks
and their switching boxes all working. They paid off many times -- the low
antenna or pair of antennas was noticably better to western Europe much of the
time from mid-morning to late afternoon. The stacks were better for the longer
haul.
A 10-meter stack would have been useful. On Sunday when the band finally got
hot, the G, F, and I stations started coming in on the direct path, while those
further east continued on a skewed path from the East or Southeast. A stack
would have let me cover both bets at once.

Station:
FT1000MP, Inrad 1.8 khz filters. TS940S used infrequently for spotting RX on
other bands.
Antennas:
14 Beverages, including several phased pairs, for the low bands.
160: 100-ft Rohn 25, series-fed vertical, hundreds of on-ground radials. VHF
antennas for top loading. Wire parasitic elements for 3-el. NE/SW array.
80: Inverted Vee at 95 feet on the 15-meter tower.
40: 3-el Hy-Gain Explorer on Ring Rotor at 83 feet on the same tower as 20-meter
stack and 10-meter side. Serious detuning of the 40-meter beam when it is
perpendicular to the 20-meter yagis (that is, when it's pointing at JA!).
20: 4/4/4 stack of 204BA Hy-Gain yagis at 30/65/99 feet, on 98-foot Rohn 45
tower. 40 and 10 meter yagis also are on this tower.
15: 4/4 stack of Wilson 415M yagis (17-ft booms) at 50 and 100 feet, on 98-foot
Rohn 25 tower. 80-meter inverted vee is also on this tower with apex at 95
feet.
10: Single modified Hy-Gain 105BA (W3XU design) side-mounted on the Rohn 45
tower, 7 feet below the middle 20-meter beam. A homebrew 10-meter 5-element yagi
is hung from a pine tree at 16 feet high, fixed South, to provide coverage in
the shadow of the 105BA's sidemount coverage.
Amps: Single-band glass tube amps. 4-1000A GG on 160; Pair of 4-400 GG on 80;
pair of 4-400s grid-driven each on 40, 20, 15; 4-1000 GG on 10.
