Comments:
Strategy sure goes out the window when conditions don't co-operate. Made one Q
on 10 (tnx K6AM), then never went back. A couple of good runs on 75 made up for
it. Mostly H&P, though. Ah, the wonderfulness of low power (you QRP guys are
just nuts).
Never did hear a VY, just those calling them. Just too far south, too far east
and too little metal in the air. Breaks run of 6 straight Sweeps - start a new
one next year maybe. Had just about given up on AK when I ran across KL7J on 20
with a respectable signal. Noted the freq and stopped back every few minutes to
see if the west/midwest pile had thinned. Got him about 90 minutes after first
hearing him and about 15 minutes before 20 bottomed.
Gratifying hearing what a great signal I supposedly had. I'm running my late
father's (WB2KQC) FT102. Dad was John (Joe) Sullivan. Anybody who has seen
movie 'FREQUENCY' might understand why I was a little nervous about all the
auroral activity. That and an almost 30-year-old TA-33/40 at 35 feet and 75m
inverted vee seemed to have done the job.
The ears might have lost a little but the rest of the body was really the worst
for wear. I don't mind the sore back and blurry eyes, but those snakes
slithering around the shack in the last couple of hours were a little disturbing
(only kidding. sorta). Probably would have hit the 1000 mark, but shut off rig
at 0200 and went in to watch tv. Then realized there was an hour to go. Yes,
Virginia, it is a ***** getting old!
Thanks to all for being there, especially to the guys way up north. Thanks to J
at VY1JA and the op(s?) at VY1MB and all the other Canadian stations for hanging
in there and doing what they could. Hopefully, next year I'll make it into a NT
log again.
and remember: CONTESTING IS FUN!
