Comments:
After last year's great 6 meter openings anything less would have been a let
down, and this year was. Saturday had some short Es openings on 6 meters and
the locals kept the upper bands busy. The tropo enhancement was better on
Saturday, so the decision to wait to deploy the 23cm antenna until Sunday was a
mistake! Sunday was very slow with a few bright spots; including working a new
state from this grid on both 135 cm and 70 cm (CA). Since the Forest Service
closed our usual site because of fire danger we had to find another high point
on the Mogollon Rim to operate from this year. This turned out to be a blessing
in disguise because the new site we found is much better than the old one. The
new location is only 6 airline miles from the old one and has an unobstructed
270 degree horizon. The down side is the wind can be fierce on this 7900 foot
high point! We were nearly blown off the site on Saturday afternoon. Next time
I'll bring a better operating shelter. Looking forward to operating the
September contest from there.
