Comments:
Because of a family outing Friday, from which we got home at 0335Z, I missed the
first four hours of the contest. Lacking a chance at the top ten, I decided to
operate as much as possible without totally depriving myself of sleep coming
into a new work week with some deadlines. This strategy resulted in weak
low-band numbers, but I enjoyed getting some sleep! I also took time here and
there to shower and have a couple of meals with my family. That made the weekend
a lot nicer than the usual "dungeon mode" SOAB efforts. My wife didn't call me
"the man from the basement" even once during the contest (as in, "Look, kids,
it's the man from the basement!")
I found 20 meters to be generally not very productive, except for multipliers,
which CQWW always produces in abundance. When I could do it, I was running on 15
meters instead, and when I couldn't, 20 was just too poor for productive
CQing--especially Saturday afternoon. I also completely missed the usual 6 AM to
7 AM (local) 20-meter run, which is usally quite good, on Saturday morning--the
band just didn't open until just a few minutes before 15 broke loose. Fifteen
meters was stunning for this time in the cycle. Ten meters, too, just won't
quit! The Qs weren't there, but I had some fun CQing there Saturday morning and
was impressed by the variety of stuff that was there to work at different
times.
The second radio made the weekend a lot more enjoyable. It would have been
B-o-r-i-n-g without it!
The contest was a lot of fun, and I'll be back in dungeon mode next year!
