This was just my second try at VHF contesting. I recently bought an FN-857D and
I have a CushCraft 5-element beam up on the tower (www.xmlog.com/shack).

This contest started at about the same slow pace as last January and I wasn’t
hearing anything coming through except for folk within a state or two. I
decided to set an easy goal, just make 40 or 50 QSOs to break the ‘record’ I set
in January. Fortunately upon returning to the rig after a lawn-mowing break on
Sunday at about 1900Z I found that there was a good auroral opening in progress.
This made things a lot more interesting and meant that I was working stations
in 8 and 9 land, one in Minnesota, and a few others down south as well. As soon
as the aurora took over I pointed the beam north and left it there for the rest
of the contest. The auroral distortion made CW the preferred mode and I had
only one SSB QSO (1 of 70) during this period. So, what was the first thing I
checked when sitting down at the rig at 1900Z? I tuned to 50.103 to see if
CY9SS was coming through and I heard his raspy CQ and got him afrter a call or
two – nice! I also managed a QSO with FP/N6RA a little later down the log.
