100% S&P and 100% recorded voice files with Writelog. I still need
to tweak some of my recordings, but the basics work very well and
saves my voice and my family sanity (since the shack is right
below the master bedroom.) It also makes me feel like I'm
operating a CW contest as well.
All I really wanted to do was play on the radio and work some new
DXCC on the six bands this weekend. FY5KE was new for me
on 160 and I got to 100 countries on 80 meters with EA9IE,
giving me my 5BDXCC, so that made the two late night sessions worth it.
I had six bands with three stations, FY5KE, PJ2T and VP9/W6PH.
W6PH had the best line after we finished on 15 meters:
"Another satisfied 6-band customer!" And that was extremely
true since VP9 on 10 meters was a new one for me (finally.)
There were lots of highlights - mainly in the wee hours of
the morning - after having dinner out with friends on Saturday
evening/nite, I forced myself to go to 20 after 0400, because
it seemed like 10 & 15 were really doing well when I left,
and when I turned on the radio, 40, 80 and 160 were just
covered in summer-like static crashes.
Basically, 20 was open from my QTH to Africa (I heard ZS's having
normal net roundtables clear as a bell); VK & ZL, who were
pounding in like they were also next door (too bad more of
them weren't on the air CQ'ing); KH6 and much more.
Suddenly around 0530, 20 meters went quiet - and almost all
the static was gone on 40, 80 & 160. I found a few more VK's
on 20, a bunch of mults on 40 & 80 and put 52/22 in the log
between 0415 and 0715.
Unfortunately, I should not have gone to bed, because I didn't
put 50 Q's in the log the rest of the contest. Sunday was
just awful. I could hear Europeans, but couldn't raise
more than 1 of every 20 of them. I got so guilty at the
low rates that I went upstairs at one point and asked the
XYL what chores I could do. I helped hang some pictures
and bolted some furniture to the wall to keep the kid
from tipping things over. In between were little five
minute breaks that featured some spot chasing. At one
point I S&P'd with one radio and put the other on K3ZO
so I could hear Fred run stuff that I couldn't hear.
Other than the bad propagation, the low-lights from my
observation post included the following: CT3MD asking
people to spot him; PJ4G asking people to spot him; W5KFT
CQ'ing at 7050 on Sunday morning (a tired op I'm sure),
V47KP with terribly overmodulated audio and KC1XX
ruining the fun by suddenly calling CQ directly
on top of a mini-pileup on 75 meters with LR2F.
So much for that multiplier and the guy's run frequency.
Now for the breakdown of my no-tower, suburban low
power log. CW contests are so much more fun.
