Congrats to K4ZW!
This was the first major DX contest in several years without any European QSOs
on 10 meters, so this must officially be the start of the sunspot minimum.
Compared to Sunday, the first-day conditions on the other bands were
outstanding.
On Sunday 20 opened late -- while I worked a few western Europeans in the 09z
hour, and I heard many Europeans in the 12z hour I just couldn't get any runs
going till 13z. And I stayed on 20 since I couldn't hear any Europeans to speak
of on 15. A few made it through on SSE scatter path late in the day (20z
hour).
Saturday night brought us summerlike QRN conditions. After working what I could
I decided to take a nap on the couch in the 04z hour. I didn't set an alarm but
woke up 45 minutes later to find 160 wide open to Europe with much less QRN, and
ended up staying the whole hour there just for the fun of it. Then went back to
get some runs on 80 and 40 and never knocked off for another nap; 40 meters just
wouldn't quit to Europe. I did find myself dozing a bit at the keyboard around
12z.
First night as I tried to log a KL7 mult just after 09z it crashed the logging
program (NA) and gave me an error message at some hexidecimal address. I
rebooted several times but it kept happening. Spent 45 minutes reloading the
program and trying to debug till I noticed the little line at the end of DOS
directory: "0 bytes available" -- my hard drive was full! Deleted some old files
and all was well. At least it didn't happen in a high-rate hour; I kept paper
log while I chased some mults as I was working on the computer.
Had another computer glitch Sunday afternoon when I realized some 20 meter QSOs
on the second radio (a TS940) were showing up as 10 meters in the log. I
manually changed for a couple of hours till I realized the 12v power cord on the
computer interface to the 940 had pulled out.
Rigs, amps and antennas all worked fine all weekend without any breakdowns.
Second radio still just running low power and I find it much tougher to use that
to advantage on phone vs. cw.
New roofing filter in the FT1000MP main radio seems to help with the crud on
SSB.
