Comments:
At W6YX, 15 meters was the best band this weekend, 10 meters was a pleasant
surprise, and the low bands were a relative disappointment, as members of the
Stanford Amateur Radio Club took up what turned to be a relatively casual
multi-two effort in the 2005 ARRL DX Phone.
Club Contest Sensei Mork, K6UFO, was necessarily absent for the event but
enlisted your author, W6YX newcomer Mark, K6OWL, to coordinate this year's
efforts. K6UFO kindly came in Thursday evening to help set up for the
contest.
The battle royal began Friday afternoon local time with K6OWL slogging it out on
20 toward the Carribean with Dan, K6IF, making the better choice of running JA's
on 15 to lead our best sustained combined rate of 150/hour. K6IF left as 15
closed and K6OWL turned north and west on 20, later dropping down to 40 and 80.
Mike, N7MH, arrived later in the evening starting on 40. John, KJ9U, and Dave,
AA6XV, handled the late night shift on 40 and 80 (no 160 antenna available).
Jon, W6FEL, woke up at 3 AM and came in to join KJ9U to "troll the low bands".
Rising K index and big aurora limited our low band access to EU and hampered
getting through on the higher bands as well later during daylight.
Saturday morning found the return of N7MH along with Chris, W6KNS, working 20
and 15 as KJ9U retired to the couch to strategize. K6OWL relieved W6KNS and
began working 20 and later 10 meters. KJ9U relieved N7MH sticking primarily to
15. For a brief instant, the combined rate meter topped 250/hour -- obviously
(see below), this was neither typical nor sustained. Visitors on Saturday
included Carol, W6GEM, and Harry, KX6C.
Propagation deteriorated that evening suggesting low band fun was not at hand
and the shack was left vacant for about 12 hours. The WX was excellent on
Sunday after weeks of dreary weather, leaving K6OWL to finish the contest solo,
alternating left and right between bands, CQ'ing, and running, and
troubleshooting an intermittant audio problem, all to little avail as the rate
plummeted through the PM. Hung up the headset when AA6XV arrived to do antenna
work and the score passed the 1.3 M mark.
