Comments:
Thanks to John Evans, N3HBX, for letting me use his great new
station! Everything worked...no failures during the contest at
all. There are more antennas than I know what to do with yet! :-)
TR-Log says 151 second radio QSO's. That's a bit high due to the
way that the program counts them...
I got off to a slow start. Bad news for me since slow starts in SS
are something of a tradition. I think I was 100 QSO's down from
last year's total about midnight. I ended up quitting an hour
or maybe 90 minutes before I planned. I had two reasons for this.
1) The rates seemed down. 2) I missed my "before contest nap"
and was having a great deal of trouble remembering things like
whether I was in a QSO or not.
40 and 80 were so noisy Saturday night that this was probably a
good thing. Conditions on Sunday night on 40 were pretty good.
I ended up staying on until 10:00PM...I usually run out of time
earlier. I was planning to push 80 much harder this year
(and made about 100 more QSO's there), but the QRN was terrible!
I heard a bit of chatter on 15 tuning around Sunday afternoon
... "turn your beam to the east coast...a lot of people need
you" or something like that. It turned out to be someone
talking to VY1JA. I stuck around, thinking I was wasting my
time, and suddenly Jay was loud. I think I was the second QSO
after that. Not a waste of time at all. Thanks for the
sweep, J!
I had 78 sections when I went to bed. The 79th showed up
in the middle of the morning. Guess what that was this
year? SFL! Geez...I ended up with 9 of them.
Two interesting things, mostly unrelated to radio. One,
I microwaved some soup and spilled some on my finger.
Ouch...typing with a wet kleenex on your finger is
tricky! It's impressively blistered this morning but
doesn't hurt any more.
I then took a "shortcut" driving home with a car
full of radio stuff and got pulled over by the
Pentagon police. Turns out I was speeding...I gave the
officer a rather blank look, I'm sure, since I was so
tired and I got a warning about the 25MPH speed limit
through the "reservation"!
