Comments:

I’ve been to two county fairs and a rodeo, and I ain’t seen nothing like this.
Operating single band 20m from Morocco, one hop from Europe, was like having a
booth at the county fair right in the middle of the fun center. Sure, there were
lots of takers, but the guy in the booth one khz away would see a crowd forming
at my booth, pull out his megaphone, and scream for customers offering teddy
bears like I was giving away pencils and chicklets. Then I would stand on the
counter, yelling, get your 3 points here! By then it was 30 over 9 din, and you
could only deal with the loudest customers. I figured out the best place for my
booth was below 14150, at the edge of the carnival, where at times I could here
the second and third tier stations. When the states would open up late in the
day, I would go to the 14200’s, it was back to the fun center, I could barely
find a place to stand. You should here the line of East coast stations and the
big Euro’s, they were all hitting the bell bumpers with 30lb hammers, ringing
the bells like crazy. Heck, I felt like turning my headset inside out!

I love fairs and SSB tests, but have only attended ones in Asia, the western
Pacific, and the Caribbean. Doing this test adjacent to Europe was a first for
me, and operating probably the top station in the world at this time, was a
distinct honor. The three 20m antennas were pointed at 330 (US), 30 (Europe and
Asia), and 240 (South America). Jim’s towers are higher than Ferris Wheels! In
the end, my score showed 70% Europeans and 24% NA. I worked only 10 JA’s, where
the beam heading is the same as Europe, and more difficult to hear than a dart
missing a balloon. My comrades in the Pacific NW were thin as well.

I thank all the operators for their patience with their reports. It was a blast,
and Jim W7EJ, your station, CN2R is a work of art surrounded by wheat fields, a
beautiful place, and wonderful people. The local hams are the best, thank you
for inviting us to your homes. A special thanks to Ali, CN8TW, for your
hospitality.

Until next time, 73’s Brad K7ZSD
