Comments:

This proved to be a fun, but very HOT, adventure to the Outer Banks of North
Carolina. It took me three campgrounds to find a spot that fit my radio needs.
The first plan was to operate from Ocracoke Island, but the campground there
was a total bust. I spent Thursday night there and took a ferry to Hatteras
Island first thing in the morning. I found a good spot on the Pamlico sound,
but I could have used more room for antennas and another mast, but one was
going to have to do it. I was about 50 feet from the sound and thew water came
all the way to my truck during a massive thunderstorm (40MPH winds!) that
produced a big wind tide. The antennas stayed up through it all and I survived
OK. The lightning was quite scary, considering my 30 foot mast was the highest
thing around and I was about 15 feet from it.

I got on the air a little Friday evening and noticed there was a hissing noise
that was probably not going to go away. It was S7 the entire contest and I
tried several things to get rid of it, but I had no luck with that. The heat
made it very difficult to keep my butt in the chair for an extended period of
time, so I took many trips into the sound to cool off. Also, about 80 percent
of the contacts were very difficult because of the noise, but that was all part
of the challenge. Asia came through quite well from this site. JAs were very
strong and answered my CQs on 20M each morning.

Next time I need to find a better place to operate from. A place with more
space and AC would be a sweet deal!

Rates were nothing great, but it wasn't too slow either. My antennas were very
simple (70 foot wire in an L formation, 20M dipole with open wire line). I used
a Ten Tec Corsair as the main rig.

73,

Nate/N4YDU
