Comments:
I knew I was in trouble when my finicky FT747 IF radio for 222MHz, finally gave
one feeble kick and expired Friday night.
Adding to the challenge, we got a coating of ice and snow on Friday and it was
still on my antennas Monday morning. Our forest was also coated, which didn't
help propagation. Very poor conditions on all bands on Saturday. High noise on
Sunday afternoon. Signals to the south were very weak. I never even heard a lot
of the big guys (no fault of theirs).
Worked my only 1296MHz contact out of this area, with VE2JWH in FN35 on Saturday
night. This is normally a hopeless path ... so go figure. Finally made my
solitary 903MHz contact with VA3KA on Sunday. Good propagation to the east
Saturday night and Sunday night. Propagation to the west was rare at the best of
times. Only one rover contact with VE3OIL/R and it was in FN04, of all places.
There was a respectable turn out of locals - thanks guys. And fortunately we had
several local 1296 stations. If it hadn't been for Tom the VE3WCC/R rover and
several VE2's, my score would have been much worse. Thanks Tom for roving under
the worst of conditions.
June will be better!
Rick (VE3CVG)
