Comments:

Well, the grand finale was indeed grand.  Thanks especially to the newcomers who
enlivened our final session -- W0ETT, NF4A, W4IX and others.

First, congratulations to the 2006 NS Ladder (NSL-III) winners:

Mike, W9RE, 14764 pts, East of Ms. River
Jim,  N3BB, 14070 pts, West of Ms. River 
Ken,  N6RO, 14070 pts, NCCC in CA/NV

Record score: 1920, N3BB in Wk7 and N4AF in Wk 12 (60Q's, 32 Mults)
Record Q's: 61, Ken N6RO in Wk 4 (N4AF, N3BB, W9RE and N6RO all had 60Q's in
various weeks)

"Iron Man" competitors: W7WHY and W0BH made all 12 sessions.

In the close race for 2nd place in NCCC div, N6ZFO, yours truly, just edged out
Kurt K7NV by 51 points out of 8500 (0.6%).  Thanks, Kurt, for those NV
multipliers :-).  However Kurt did beat me by a whopping 1.8% in average weekly
score (for 11 events each).  

We're still awaiting results for the close match between Tor and John, N4OGW
and K4bai, who were similarly close after 8 sessions.

When I first started to talk to the NCCC "management" about a ladder
competition in 2001, Rick, N6XI immediately saw opportunity and nominated me as
Vp/Contest Chair for the next year. So much for the ladder; but it was actually
key to getting a ladder competition started because it got me involved with the
NCCC 3830 net.  The great conversations with many sharp guys on the NCCC 3830
Contest Net that have driven the competition to its current level of
excellence. And of course that's why it's Thursday madness, not some other
random day. Particularly notable, tho was the contribution of Kurt, K7NV, for
two great concepts - - the whole idea of "summer fun", going along with my
"summer madness" and for the suggestion this year of band-mults that give NS
Ladder it's strategic focus.  What really made things smooth this year was the
great work of Ed, W0YK, who with great enthusiasm and professionalism put
together our fabulous web page at www.ncccsprint.com. Ed has maintained the
postings with unbelievable dedication and promptness. The slowness, some weeks,
was entirely mine. N6RO, as in all things, has been a great booster of the
event, and best of all, relieves me next week for the subsequent of non-ladder
NS events.  Those of you in the running for wine prizes will appreciate the
contribution of K6VVA, who made that tasty suggestion. In fact Rick was really
the guy who pushed us to intensify Sprint practices on Thursday nights three
(?) years ago.  And that new emphasis gave me the chance to inject the ladder
concept into the mix.

And we had some notable "outside of NCCC" enthusiasts who helped to promote NS
Ladder, especially Jim, N3BB, who got a huge number of his CTDXCC colleagues to
participate, including youngest participant, KU5B.  Colin, best of luck to you
at Alabama next year, and congrats on this week's record score for you.  But
each of you took the chance and got into this are all NS promoters, and we
thank you.

Last, but not least, Howie, N4AF, provided the expertly written NS score
calculator.  You should all be using the Windows version of this program.  Not
only that, but Howie was one of just 4 stations to achieve 60 or more QSO's,
and has the honor, after tonight, of top NS Score, tied with N3BB as noted
above.

For a while now, N6ZFO will fade out as I begin a major new career in clinical
diagnostics at the Nichols Institute [part of Quest Diagnostics] in San Juan
Capistrano in Southern CA. This position will involve more-or-less weekly
commutes from Orange County back to the SF area, and is certain to curtail
contsting activity for a while.  But maybe I'll drag a radio and a bit of wire
along with me.  And, I'm working on some ideas for next year.  Please let me
know you thoughts.  And will try to get an NCJ article put together shortly.
