Comments:
Found a local hilltop in Western KY, and thought it would be fun to do mobile
operation -- the QTH was FB, right at the base of a large cell tower, 300 ft
above surroundings.
I hauled the laptop, keyer, rig, etc. along from Virginia while the XYL was at
the horse show in Louisville. Got to the site during daylight, found a perfect
operating location, and thought everything was fine, until the contest started!
In my first QSO with N9RV, RF in the car immediately froze up the keyer! After
2 hours of testing, it baffles me that Murphy waits until the moment of the
contest to raise his ugly head. My first 5 qsos were made by unfreezing the
locked key-down xmtr by powering it up and down and going manual! I had to
revert to complete manual keyer operation, and just used the laptop as a logger
(disconnected the keying circuit to the PC.) Sorry to those who wondered what
was going on when I went key-down -- it was RF induced.
Condx were good before the contest, as I worked K7SS with 1 watt (super low
power setting) while doing software testing.
I was very weak on 40m, and given the RF problems, I folded with 15 minutes
left to go. It could have been a blast had everything worked well. It was fun
to see how condx were different. I heard no east coasters on 20m, which is
different from VA where I always work a few. W6 and W7 were very loud in
kentucky, much louder than in VA. Surprised I didnt hear any buddies from
CTDXCC in Texas.
