One of my FT-1000MPs will only put out 17W, so I decided to try QRP. It was a
blast, and most of the time it worked very well. Unlike everyone else, I found
Saturday to be better than Sunday because with conditions so poor on 20M there
were a lot of Texas stations on 40M; for the most part I could work a lot of
them. On Sunday conditions were better on 20M and it seemed like everyone was
up there. On 20 I could hear some Texas stations very well, but others were
marginal. NO5W and KM5ES win the good ears award from me because I could
barely hear them and they were still able to pull my 5W signal out.

Another high point was working KG5U when he hit Brewster County. When I first
worked him he was pretty weak; later he was louder so I asked him if he was in
Alpine (my QTH). It turned out he was, so I drove over to the gas station
where he was filling up and we had a brief eyeball QSO. According to DX4WIN,
we have had 38 QSOs since 1998 (who knows how many before that) but this was
the first time I had seen him in the flesh. Another good reason to put all
those mobiles on the road! Great fun, as always!
