Comments:

Lots of Qs but not lots of score compared to previous years! Propagation to
VE-land was down or maybe less of our northern friends were on because of the
date. In any case, instead of 40-45% Canada worked as in the past few years,
this year the percentage was only 23.7% and the mults were way down as well.

We had really unusual weather conditions in Kansas over the weekend. On Friday,
the temp hit 70 degress until a cold front plowed through overnight with tornado
watches posted a few counties to the east. Really struggled to hear over the QRN
on 80 and 160 and finally had to QRT when the lightning got too close (in
December!). The next morning it was 20 degrees and we had a nice big snowflake
snowfall for several hours in the morning. Net result, fewer mults.

The major surprise was a nice 10m opening on Friday evening. I was running (OK,
make that plodding) on 40m SSB when VE4EAR surprised me with a VE call and told
me 10m was open. We tried right away and connected with big signals, then added
15m and 20m to the collection. I knew I needed mults and thought I had just
found a great way to get them, so I tried CQing on 10m and found VE3ZIN. He was
willing to work down the bands, so we quickly logged 15m, 20m, and 40m as well
for more new mults. Had I been able to keep that up from either end, things
would have been good, but unfortunately "no joy" as we say in aviation.

Overall, worked 8 RAC stations and 21 DX. The VE count looks like this:

AB 31 NS 1
BC 21 NT 2
MB 16 ON 127
NB 6 QC 28
NL 5 SK 11

I really enjoy the easy-going nature of this contest and being able to take
time to chat from time to time. Thanks to all for the Qs and for the season's
greetings. Here's to many more Qs with you all in 2009!

73 and HNY, Bob, w0bh
