Comments:

After losing out last year we decided to try again from Keri this year and to
give our best and see if that is good enough. We took it very seriously, went
there by boat and crew of more than 10 on Monday to get all the antennas built
up and station ready in time. We were also lucky to be the only station from
EU149 this year, that definitely shows also in our QSO and mult count!

We had also photo and video crew with us so please check www.es2q.com for
pictures, videos, etc. Had also webcam running during the contest.

I was still in awe about the great performance of verticals at Ducie island and
especially 4 Squares on low bands so I decided to settle at no less! Thanks to
Carsten, DL6LAU for providing all the materials for Spiderbeam pole 4 Squares
(like used on Ducie).

Antennas used:
80m - 1. full size 4 square with 20 1/4 radials per each vertical
      2. coil loaded 15m high vertical
      3. 15m high dipole/inverted V

40m - 1. full size 4 square with 20 1/4 radials per each vertical
      2. 15m high dipole/inverted V

20m - 1. 15m high JP 2000 tribander
      2. full size 4 square with 20 1/4 radials per each vertical
      3. 12m high JP tribander

15m - 1. 15m high JP 2000 tribander
      2. 12m high JP tribander

10m - 1. 15m high JP 2000 tribander
      2. 12m high JP tribander

In addition to all that we had another simple HF6V vertical for mult station on
the far end of the island to enable mult picking on the same band (mostly the
other mode).

BIG thanks goes to the whole team for working real hard all the days to get all
the antennas up and of course to Tõnu, ES2DW for delicious cooking. Although
the operating was all mostly done by me, ES2RR or OH1JT we could not have done
anything by ourselves.

The battle was really fierce! We decided to start with high rate and picked the
easiest band mode for that. Ran 3 200+ hours on 20SSB and that probably gave us
a small early lead to competitors, GJ6YB being the most dangerous as appeared
later. But then the rates dropped and we started to see GJ6YB slowly slipping
away. It was really tense:

19.41z GJ6YB + 31 QSO
20.22z GJ6YB + 55 QSO
21.06z GJ6YB + 91 QSO
22.48Z GJ6YB + 158 QSO
23.48Z GJ6YB + 168 QSO
05.50Z GJ6YB + 176 QSO
07.26Z GJ6YB + 246 QSO!

At that moment 4.5 hours to go we clearly understood that this battle has been
decided and we don't have a chance. We also had seen MD4K and IS0/OM3LA passing
by in QSO numbers during the slow night that we had. Only nice thing about the
night and morning was nice US pileup on 40CW.

But we did not give up and switched from rather good 20CW to 15 and 10SSB. Boy,
what a propagation to EU. Next 2 hours were 220-235 SSB pilups. Last one was a
bit more modest in 10 and 15CW.

Was that enough to catch up? Very unlikely. And then at 11.49z GJ6YB calls in
on 15CW, we give him 3317 and our ops are completely astounded to get 3315
back!!! While we had had 837 QSOs in the last 4 hours and 23 minutes then they
had had just 589! We QSY to 10CW although the band seems quite dead already and
I am able to work them with small HF6V vertical 2 minutes later for our 3321 and
they give us back 3321!! WOW! I think we had mutual confusion there as to what
number belonged to whom:) 10 minutes before the end of 24 hour contest and the
numbers exactly identical, never saw that before:)

The last QSOs with MD4K and IS0/OM3LA also show already considerable edge to us
so I guess we just have to see how good the GJ6YB guys have been with
multipliers. Look forward to their posting. We are happy to match DR6IOTA guys
this year with mults as they are always very good at it. Anyway, whoever comes
out as a winner here deserves it. If it is not us I guess we just have to try
again next year:)
