Comments:

This summer, I've been focused more on vacations than radio and enjoyed my
Saturday before WAE in Ocean City, MD - with picture perfect weather...and
thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts. I don't have a motorcycle myself, however
it looked like the equivalent of our Dayton hamvention for these folks!

After returning home late Saturday, I found 40 & 80 to be fun pouncing on a few
guys before going to bed. Had about 40 QSOs in the log before shutting down.

Got up early Sunday - got on 20m at 6:30, and was amazed to see that I was too
late to the party. The band was already open, and it was very runnable. The
band has flip-flopped back to fall propagation with the great morning openings
and I was off to a good start. Everybody wanted QTCs and at times I had
pileups of folks calling for QTCs, which I never had. My rate also suffered
because folks couldn't believe I was handing out a number so low and they asked
for repeats. I would have been smart to start out at a high number!

There were some huge signals from Europe in this contest, and there were also
some amazing scores coming from up in W1 land in this contest. I was amazed
hearing the runs by K1ZM, K1DG and K1LZ.

Of course I thoroughly enjoy listening to John Evans, N3HBX operating at his
super-station under Mark's KD4D call sign. John is very happy these days to
have his station completed, and "other" business also successfully completed.
Congratulations, John!

N3KS, Kam was putting his new K3 and new Opti-beam to good use. As usual, we
enjoyed a spirited chat during the slow times of the contest.

WN3R, Dick gave his gorgeous mountain-top station a good dry run for the season
this weekend - and it was great seeing his success on the bands. Dick is also
playing with a new K3 these days. There sure seem to be a lot of K3's on the
air these days...

This was a relaxing event for me, and there was very little QRM or battle for a
run frequency that the other contests have, in fact folks just moved out of the
way or QSYed if politely asked.

I also heard some serious honesty and good sportsmanship in this contest coming
from Doug Grant, K1DG as he tried to manufacture a contact on 15 meters. Doug
refused to "complete" the QSO/un-heard serial number on his 20 meter run
frequency - he told the other station he couldn't log them in good faith, since
he really didn't hear the serial number. Wasn't Doug the instructor at the
Dayton contesting seminar for the contesting ethics class?

Thanks for the many spots from my European and USA friends. It makes the
contest rate go up and it's always nice to see where you're being heard.

Well the season has officially started and there's not much time before we'll
all be attending the CQWW SSB Contest at the end of October!

Jim Nitzberg WX3B
