Comments:

W5FOC is the fourth call I used while driving across the south during the NAQP
CW Contest. I had previously used K5NA in Louisiana, N5AA in the first half of
Mississippi, and K5DU in the last half of Mississippi.

So far I have made poor progress during the trip as bad weather and high winds
have affected my average speed. Add to that the usual joys of travelling with
grandkids and I was arriving in Alabama much later than expected (2151Z).

I kept hoping that the weather would improve as we travelled further east but
that wasn't happening. The weather was actually getting worse, much worse. As
we got closer to Birmingham, it was like the weather had been sent from Hell to
torture me.

I found myself driving along a crowded interstate at 30 miles per hour, my
four-way blinkers flashing, and my windshield wipers going at full speed.
Though it was still over an hour before sunset, it was as dark as night and
visibility was limited to about a hundred feet. I was thankful that there was a
car ahead of me and I could follow his lights. It was almost raining too hard to
see the lane dividers. Occasionally there would be a nearby lightning strike
that scared everyone in the car.

Every now and then I would try to make a few QSOs. But as we drove around
Birmingham on the Interstate 459 bypass, Susan nudged me and said "this is
pretty rough and you should stop". I couldn't argue with her on that point and
we pulled into the next hotel opportunity.

I used four of the five calls that I had planned to use and I gave it my best
effort. The weather was just a little too rough to complete my plans fo using
all five calls. The only call I had planned to use and didn't was KT2Z.

After we got back from our driving trip last night I sat down and transcribed
my logs from handwriting to a contest program. That took a little while and I
may have had some errors where I tried to read the writing and get it into the
computer log. So I don't expect this will be my best contest for logging
accuracy.

But as usual, I do these things because it is fun. And I would do it again even
if I knew the weather was going to be what it was.

73, Richard - K5NA
