Comments:
Ive been QRT for most of the year so Saturday morning found me at the vacation
QTH with no antennas. At 6 AM in the middle of a torrential rainstorm I
managed to get lines up 60 feet in 3 trees. I used the trees to support 2 20M
ED Zepps at right angles (NE&SE). They were fed with ladder line to baluns in
the shack. This year I remembered to spray the lines with silicon to reduce
rain problems and attach reflector tape to avoid deer incidents. By noon I was
ready to go. The K3's tuner matched both antennas from 80-10 and by pressing
Ant1 or Ant2 I could change directivity.
I got off to a slow start S&Ping and re-familiarizing myself with N1MM. By
midnight I had only 225 Q's and thought of pulling the plug on the contest.
Up at 6, I decided to change tactics and try running. My rate increased
significantly and I managed 3 consecutive 60+ hours on 20. The rejection off
the ends of the Zepps seemed to be 2-3 S units and really helped with the big
W6 sigs. On 40 the directivty was not as pronounced but still useful. There
was
no difference between the antennas on 80.
I went back to S&P'ing the last hour to look for mults and managed AB and EWA
with minutes remaining (missed MB&NL for the sweep).
Next year--more preparation and CQing!
