Glad to be back to the pile-up side! The propagation from this part of Africa is
new to me. Band opens around 08Z and dies immediately after the sun-set at
around 16Z, only giving some 10 hours of effective operation.
Band was so-so/not bad on Saturday and Sunday till mid-day, and then someone
decided to switch it off! Just a few US/NA made it through Sunday afternoon,
compared to a hefty number of stations on Saturday. At times QSB was so bad
that I had to repeat/request the exchange several times, while picking the call
at 599 the first time!? The pile-ups were coming in "waves" - I guess not
because of the cluster spots, but simply because the band was "breathing" this
way. One can simply hear it by the SNR. One moment most everyone is clear and
above, the noise very much disappears, and the next moment they sink into abyss
and all you hear is sssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Just read KH7B comments, well :-) I was looking for Z31 too. Tough luck! NL7Z
made it through by bursting his call during one the EU QSOs and managed to pick
him up. Guess you were just too far away Dick!
There was another one that got me by surprise. 9V1YC called in at 15:25 Sunday
with 599, which is in the middle of the night there!? Wonder who pulled that
joke on me?! Well, 15 may be full of surprises now and then... James if you
read this, let me know :-)
All in all a good start with the new call-sign. Did a test run from Sudan in WW
SSB as ST2KSS, 15m, and just recovered the log from the HDD crash that happened
after the test. Score: 4017/139/38/ and 2.1M points.
Iâm stationed in Sudan now, probably for the next two years, so will try to
operate as much as time permits.
