Comments:
Sure was nice to finally have some decent conditions and a little more room to
operate this weekend. Participation seemed to be great as well...Had high winds
and rain here on Saturday morning and lost power for 2 hours .... I was right in
the middle of a nice European run on 15 meters when the lights went out !!! All
Bands combined ...I worked a total of 151 countries and 39 zones ( Missed Zone
23 )this weekend. ..... I think the overall conditions seemed improved over the
past few of years. We had a excellent opening to Asia on 20 meters at the end of
the contest on Sunday.
Band Observations ....
160 ... ( Very Poor ) Qrn Level was high and conditions seemed disturbed ..
heard a few Europeans ... but signals seem way down ... Band was poor here.
80 ... ( Poor ) Better than 160 w/ reduced Qrn .. but poor compared to previous
years ... lots of Europeans heard ... but overall signals were down ... had
trouble getting past the wall of European QRM... although this is typically not
a problem for me ..... Not enough antenna here with a single vertical and
inverted V.
40 ... ( Good ) Great band openings and plenty of activity ....Wall to Wall
Europeans... Lots of US stations trying to hold a run frequency w/ the new
portion of the band available this year ... S&P worked best for me... although
I did make a couple of short runs when the band was winding down. Country and
Zone totals were up this year for me.
20 ... ( Very Good ) The Band was wide open ... Just too many Europeans for me
to hold a run frequency w/ a single tri-bander & wires.... Did make a few runs
when the band was first opening ... but mostly S&P here ... Lots of JA's with
big signals on Sunday afternoon ...Excellent opening to Asia ... even worked a
couple of stations from Antartica !!
15 ... ( WOW !!! ) Finally we get a break and the band opens for 2 days in a
row !! For the little pistol, this was the place to be.. a great band to run up
your Qso totals ... Had good runs both days .. and the single tri-bander at
100ft worked quite well...at times it seemed there was an endless supply of
Europeans calling .. Hi Hi !!
10 ... ( Poor ) ... This band never opened to Europe or Africa for me ... All
Propagation was south .... Lots of Activity as usual from South America ...
Great operators there as well ... Maybe next year ???
