Comments:
I had hand surgery just prior to the WPX CW contest. Each time
I visit the surgeon the first words out of his mouth are
"I told you it would take a year - how are you doing."
No pain in the thumb, but very little strength. I was unable
to install my 80m 4-square this year because of the lack of
hand strength. I was able to pull up the wire 160m "almost
verticals" on the ropes left on the tower this past spring,
and install a pair of bidirectional beverages.
With all the chatter the week before the contest about the
great 160m conditions, I figured I would run the 125 foot
long extension cord to the clothes dryer 240v outlet and
see if the Titan still worked after all these years running
low power.
This past week I've been battling some bug, but the doctor
said on Wednesday it wasn't H1N1, so I set myself in the
chair Friday night expecting great things.
I never left the chair for more than 2 minutes during my
18 hours of operating time; I called CQ from time to time
for a few minutes but never raised any DX. The first night
I worked everyone I heard, but I only heard two Europeans.
The second night I heard a number of Eurpeans I couldn't
work, even though the pileups didn't seem too big on
stations such as E7DX, TK9R, DR1A, S56P, and CR3A. I was
pretty happy to catch ZS9X.
Does the 28 day rule on propagation repeating itself
apply to top band?
