Comments:

The Hesston College Sweepstakes team this year included two Air Traffic Control
students (Jake and Jerry) and three Aviation students (Emma, Andy and Simon).
We trained for about two months and also got in several warm-up contests (CQP
and PAQP) in preparation for November. Since aviation uses the same phonetic
alphabet as amateur radio, it was excellent practice for their careers as well.
Even listening to recordings of previous contests, the students were still
amazed when 2100Z came around and the bands lit up. The Air Traffic Control
students probably thought they were in Atlanta tower the Wednesday before
Thanksgiving!

As usual, we had two radios set up with one on run and another for search and
pounce. We used signal lights to make sure we didn't transmit at the same time
(low tech, but it worked). For the first time this year, we also had Internet
spotting in the shack which is allowed in the School category. Emma was
particularly good at finding the new multipliers and busting pileups. Our
Sweep came compliments of VE5ZX at 1244Z and the last five section countdown
was OK, NE, NL, PAC and SK.

It was fun to watch our teamwork practice pay off with one student logging and
another talking. It took awhile for us to get up to speed, but Jake got the
rate meter (and the voice db level) over 100 a few times on Sunday afternoon
and can't wait for the next contest!

We put ten other School stations in the log in this order:

W1YK, W4UVA, K2CC, K9IU, N9UC, W6YX, W6RFU, W0EEE, W8SH and W1AF. Always a
pleasure, and often a short chat. I was curious to see if the rule change which
now allows alumni to operate in the School category would make a difference in
number of schools worked, so I looked back the past two years. In 2009 we
worked 15 schools and in 2008 we worked 11 schools. It will be interesting to
see what the ARRL totals show. Congratulations to (alumni!) N7MH and AA6XV at
W6YX on a really close race. We'll see how log-checking turns out.

Thanks to all who worked us (patiently at times!). I think everyone could tell
we were having fun.
