GREAT FUN!! Operated PORTABLE from my suburban in a Mall Parking lot in Huron,
SD. WE are here as a family for a swim meet for the kids during the day today,
and finish that tomorrow. Rig was an ICOM IC -706, NO CW FILTER, and an 18 ft
elevated vertical, with MFJ tuner, on the hitch of the suburban, antenna base
at 8ft off ground, NO radials, 100 watts. Used the keyer in the ICOM! Logging
DanWA would be proud of, the old pencil and paper! My apologies to those I
called as dupes, its REALLY hard to remember who you worked, especially after
changing bands, for this 46 yr old mind.

My FIRST try ever at a portable operation for NA sprint.. and low power at
that! Started on 20m, it was mostly a California QSO party, with a few AZ, OR,
WA thrown in. Not hard to make Q's, but hard to make the second Q on the same
freq, just couldn't get anyones attention! Went to 40m after 67 minutes when 20
went VERY long, 40 was REALLY good, easy to make the couplet QSO's, really a FUN
band, very productive for the antenna being quite a bit less than a quarter wave
on that band. LOTS of very loud signals and great ops!

Actually had to take the 18ft vertical down, and add a 50 ft piece of wire to
the top of it, boy that REALLY pulled this antenna over.. haha, threw it up
over a tree that was in the boulevard of the mall, and away I went on 80m..
Took me about 20 minutes to do that antenna work!

80m sounded good, but it was tough with the low antenna, got beat out a LOT,
and no couplets again... so slugged it out.. called CQ A LOT!

BOY, there are a LOT of REALLY great ears out there to hear me with this setup,
it was very MUCH a compromise, especially on 80m.. Even on 40m and 20m, you guys
are super!

Great to work you guys, thanks much for the fun evening, and now back to the
swim meet, 73 God Bless!

Todd WD0T
