First, thanks for all the QSO, I really, really appreciated them. This is the
first opportunity that I have had to spend any quality time in front of a radio
since CW Sweepstakes in November. I actually got to spend more time contesing
than I had originally expected, but certainly less time than I would have
desired.
If you take a look at the QSO breakout you can tell where I spent most of my
time. I was amazed at how well 15 meters opened for the weekend. There were
huge signals from EU and lots of activity from there as well. I got pretty
good numbers on 15 even though I took significant time off during the primetime
EU opening on Saturday morning. I used this off time to give AA4U and N4VN a
tour of the changes I have recently made to the shack. I had invited Steve and
Ron to come over during that timeframe, and it was a pleasure to have them stop
by. I tried to give the low bands a shot on Friday night, but there was a fair
amount of QRN here. So, I made the snap decision to just hunt multipliers on
the low bands, and run on the high bands. That allowed me to actually get more
sleep the first night than originally planned... Man! You gotta love you some
"gentleman contesting!!" :-) I got up at 0900Z (0300L) on Sunday morning to
pick up some more 160/80/40 AS multipliers. While picking up the mults, I saw
a few spots on 20M starting in the 11Z hour, so I went up there and amazingly
worked some EU mults early in the hour. I came back to 20M around 1130Z to
1140Z, and it was if someone had turned on a light switch. The band was
literally working alive, so I decided to try running. It worked as I started
getting callers almost immediately. It was the first time I had run EU's on
20M before sunrise from my station in quite some time. In fact, I had such a
good stream of callers on 20M that I was late getting to the 15M opening as a
result...
This was the first major shakedown of my newest Alpha 8410 amplifier. I was
curious as to how I was going to feel about manual tuned amps after having used
Alpha 87a amps here since 2005. I was pleasantly surprised at how painless it
was, so I think the decision to switch from two 87a's to two 8410's has been
validated. I had also gotten one of my K3's back from the mothership (sent it
in for repairs after damaging it in the CQWW CW) and this was the chance to
give it a ringout as well. The K3 worked very weil indeed. Picking up
"in-band" mults with the 2nd RX option is like shooting tuna fish in a
barrel... :-) I have also recently added two 46-inch monitors to the two
operating positions (many thanks to KY4F for his installation assistance), and
finally I could actually see what I was typing. Now I need to find an audio
equivalent to this visual upgrade to make up for my increaded hearing loss...
Getting old isn't any fun at all, except that it certainly beats the
alternative... ;-) Finally, this was the first shakedown of the new
QS1R/skimmer server combination here. I have to say that on first blush, I
wasn't all that happy with my skimmer system's performance in a high RF
environment. However, it took me a little while to get all the kinks worked
out of the old SDR-IQ-based system, so I will reserve final judgement on the
QS1R-based system for a while.
Guess that's enough for this edition! :-)
73,
Rick

And now for the "I gotta keep N4KG happy" statistics... :-)
