Just got to my home in Huasco, Chile late Thursday night after being gone since
last Februrary. The 3 element Steppir yagi and rotor were fine and just needed
to have the control cables and coax cables run and connected.  However, the
computer did not want to key the K3 so I had to use the K3 keyer on Friday
night but finally got it going Saturday AM.  Since this was my first 10m
contest from South America there were no expectations except to see how 10m 
compares to 15m from here.  I was pleasantly surprised as the action was very
good once the band opened up but the rates weren't as high as 15m which was
great since I was still tired from the 2 day trip to get here from Utah.  The
contest started off at 9pm Friday night local time and I worked about 75 JA
stations and a few SA and Pacific stations during the next 2 hours.  On
Saturday AM I started about 8 AM local and heard the SA east coast stations
working Europe but there was no EU propagation here.  In fact, all Saturday I 
could hear east coast SA stations working EU like mad, but propagation was
almost not existant to EU from Huasco.  However, the prop to NA was great. I
was so busy with NA that there was not much time to work EU anyway.  But it
would have been nice to have worked all those countries and zones.  I think I
only worked about 4 or 5 EU countries all day Saturday and only zones 14 and
15.  However, Sunday propagaion made up for it.  Sunday started out the same as
Saturday and I began thinking that there was just no propagaion to EU from here
when YM2W called in at noon local time with S9 signals and the antenna was
north (Turkey is 60 degrees from here) so at first I thought he must have a
remote station in NA.  However, other stations first from zone 20 then all over
Europe started calling in and during the next 3 hours I worked 33 European
countries with great signals.  It reminded me of operating 6M when your
neighbors have great Es propagation and you get nothing and then later things
change completely.  So if this is an indication of 10m propagation from SA when
sunspots are low, it must be a great band when the sun gets going.  I'll build a
monoband 10m yagi for the ARRL 10m contest in a couple of weeks and try it
again. See you on 160m next weekend (at least US, Canada, and Mexico).
