This time out I decided to see what my IC-706 MK II would do
in a real contest. I was quite impressed with how this mid
performance radio performed. I kept it at 20W and fed my
ALS- 500M amplifier to get 100W out, so as not to have to run
the IC-706 at maximum power, saving the finals. Saturday
morning I had a tough time getting past the east coast stations
into EU. I had set a goal of 1000 QSO's, and that goal did
not seem possible given the low rates that I was getting.
However perseverance prevailed, and I not only met, but
surpassed my goal. I did miss IA and NE, 2 neighboring states! I
was glad to see many rare Canadian provinces on though. I
was very impressed at how many EU countries that I able to
work on 40m with my low dipole. Also I very much enjoyed 15M
being open a bit. No 10M activity here. All in all, a great time, and I even
some decent shut eye, which my 65 year old body appreciated!
