Strange Contest...
I started on 10M working my College friend K1GQ in NH with a good signal BUT,
there was no one else on the band!
Went to 15M at 0003 where there were good signals but clearly not as many as
the guys further East or South or West of my QTH were hearing. Took a break at
1930 due to a precipitous drop in rate. After only 45 minutes more, Severe
Thunderstorms rolled in for the next hour and a half (I assume...I fell asleep
watching the news and lost 2 hours of Prime Time).
It is interesting to note that the Best Rates on 40M occur BEFORE Sunset and
drop like a rock After Sunset. (My rate at 0000 was 86 on 40 plus another 5 on
the high bands).
I Miss my MonoBanders, not just for the gain, but being able to beam 2 or 3
directions at the twist of a switch! Working Backscatter on the high bands was
"difficult". I still think that if you are going to count multipliers by band,
that High Power should be allowed (like the old CD parties, but they only
counted multipliers ONCE). It would make this contest a Lot more Fun on the
High Bands.
Sadly, it appears that I suffered an 'Aligator Clip' Failure on my 160M
Inverted L after working W4OC in SC. K4RO was able to hear me using the 40M
Delta Loop (which the Icom 746 was able to match :-), but no one else could.
Equipment: Icom 746 at 80W w/cascaded 500Hz filters
160M Inverted L
80M Elevated GP (40 ft tower top loaded with TH7 - 8 radials at 15 ft)
40M Inverted Vee at 52 ft aimed N/S, Delta Loop at 45 ft corner fed
20/15/10 TH7 at 40 ft
