K3 with KPA500 PA running 400W.
250ft sloping wire strung from a handy sequoia and fed in the shack by an ex-RN
MA144 ATU.
Logging - by hand.
With limited antenna scope, I decided again on a 160m single band entry, to see
how things play out during the leaner years for the LF bands. This strategy
also makes the most of the weekend. Right on the button was Jack VE1ZZ for the
first QSO, reminding me of our daily winter evening chats on 80m from VP8 land
more than 50 years ago. Nothing pre-arranged was ever needed, Jack always just
seemed to be around after my midnight GMT weather sked with Port Stanley.
Thanks again for all of those Jack, they were much appreciated during those
cold winter evenings! But after that, not a lot really - even W3LPL and KC1XX
were a bit of a struggle . . .
So . . . a whole 46 QSOs in the log after the first night, but hey, the second
one could be better, or could it? Still rather mixed and with nothing west of
TX or WI, but at least there were some signals above ESP level. Many callers
had to be resolved a letter at a time, as the K9AY loop is still WIP and the EU
clicks can make life over here pretty gruesome. Many thanks for your patience
in what must have seemed like endless repeats! Two other especially welcome
callers on the second night, both first worked over 50 years ago, were Paul
W0AIH and Ted K2QMF. No repeats needed there - thanks lads!
There were a couple of minor flurries when I guess I must have been spotted,
but otherwise a lot of CQing into the void for much of the time. All the big E
coast guns who would normally run had called in on the first night, when I guess
they had to poke around like everyone else in the dire conditions and so there
was little point engaging in much S&P.
There's an .mp3 recording of night 2 in case anyone would like to hear how
their signal fared - drop a line to peter at tilgate.co.uk.
As the antenna wire comes straight into the shack, I prefer to avoid running a
computer and so the final claimed score will have to await post keying-in.
I've just counted up the QSOs, a few obvious dupes and the mults (well down on
last year's haul).
Very many thanks to all who called or responded.
73, Peter M5O (G3LET)
