Comments:
The 2010 ARRL RTTY Roundup was the first semi-serious RTTY contest from NK7U. We
skipped last year but decided to put in a full bore effort this year. Our goal
was to take back the Oregon M/S record from K7ZS's KK7PR gang who took it in
2011 by a measly 2 QSO's over our 2010 score! And, if we could set a new
Northwest Division record that would be great as well.
So, with that goal we fired things up on 10M at 1800 UTC Saturday, called CQ,
had an immediate reply and then realized we were not decoding audio! Oh rats.
Took 15 minutes to find a setting that somehow we scrambled in the microKeyer
setup. But, after that little hiccup things worked great for the whole weekend.
Joe and I deemed the contest Fun and Relaxing. We could make QSO's, chat, watch
sports on TV, and enjoy a glass of wine. We definitely felt more relaxed than
after a full bore SSB slug fest.
The bands certainly had their ups and downs. We achieved both our goals pending
other postings of course. We achieved WAS Saturday night with ME, ND, and ID
being our last states. Canadian provinces seemed a bit scarcer. VE4 didn't go
into the log into late Sunday afternoon, we missed LB, NF, NS, NU, NWT, and YT.
Our 57 total states + provinces felt "average". We do feel pretty good about our
74 DX mults and our 131 total. Looking at past results anytime you can exceed
130 mults you have done a pretty good job. Activity seemed great as well. We
had our first ever 100+ hour when Joe turned in a 111 hour Sunday afternoon on
15M. Our overall rate was ~68/hour up from ~62/hour in our 2010 effort. A few
band tidbits:
* 10M -- was in great shape both days stateside at least. No Europe openings
and only 1 JA -- though we didn't really work the JA opening hard. This was
pretty much expected.
* 15M --Overall this was our money band for QSO count. We had hoped to get a
good Europe opening on Sunday for the mults but it was not to be. It behaved
much like 10M during the 10M Contest with just a short opening and a few QSO's
into EI, the G's, CT, and EA. This was really disappointing but since mults only
count once per contest all was not lost as....
* 20M was in great shape into Europe Sunday morning -- opening well before
dawn. We worked 100+ EU's on 20M with many many multipliers. AA5AU mentioned a
20M opening Saturday night which if happened in the Pac NW we missed. In fact
the band seemed to close pretty early.
* 40M we just could not get going -- not sure why. Europeans were coming in
Saturday night but we knew we could get the mults easier on Sunday on the high
bands. So, we just moved on to 80M Saturday night. The band was in great shape
before dawn on Sunday morning to Asia with many JA's logged as well as some
juicy multipliers calling in during a 96 QSO hour. The early bird does get the
worm
* 80M always surprises us with how good and active it is. We had a nice 83 hour
on Saturday night.
Thanks everyone for the QSO's. K4RO was one of only two 5 Banders. Thanks Kirk.
It was fun. Let's do it again next year!
