Comments:
First time to try Mixed Mode since paper logs, desk microphones, and memory
keyers. Had trouble getting the audio i/f to behave, couldn't find enough
ferrite to keep RF out of it. Learned a lot. Probably made a few bad choices
on when to be on phone, but also some good ones, with a great clear frequency
on 20m in the afternoon just before the big solar wind surge. Never much DX
rate on phone for me this time, but 15m cw was very nice at times, and 10 was
tantalizingly spotty with skew and short path. Missed a bunch of mults that I
heard at the margins of propagation. Only a few successful moves.
The combination of poor solar wx and local storminess that has lasted a week
and shows no sign of moving out made hearing DX really tough unless it was an
LU or CE :)
Morning was good. Evening was bad, bad, bad. Late night was pretty well
awful. Even Oklahoma stations had auroral notes. Boulder K index trend was
not good: 2 3 5 4 4 5 6 7. Seven!
One 80m inv vee went south in the wind somehow, it was working while eating a
meal before the start but was NG after sunset. Otherwise no apparent
casualties from the three big boomers that went through during prime time in
the afternoon and evening. Missed a little time watching lightning bolts
nearby, too close for comfort. About three hours of rain static and crash
static most of the time from 8am on. Yuck. 10" of rain Thursday, 2" Friday,
5" more on Saturday, drought is OVER.
Still a great day fishing for mults and running the races!
