Comments:
HQ Multipliers in this contest are almost totally a function of your propagation
to Europe. Not fair, but given the super activity from EU and the HQ stations,
a lot of fun.
I ended up having a free weekend I didn't realize I had, and about 2 weeks ago
decided to operate this contest. It must have been destined to happen, because
the amplifier I blew up in the All Asian contest turned out to need only minor
repairs, and I was pretty much set to go.
I was very fortunate that no real storms hit during the contest. They did come
close! But noise and lightning were not a factor.
The start to JA on 40 was very poor -- much worse than last year. And with the
high bands slow to open in the summer mornings, I didn't know if there would be
any fun at all. Boy was I wrong! 15 was full of signals much earlier than
usual, and it was off to the races right away. 10m sounded good as well, but I
never ran there because 15 was so good.
Amazing how many people really had trouble with my zone. Yes, its 6. I ended
up spelling "six" to some people who just couldn't get it. The auroral flutter
didn't exactly help.
The wheels came off in the late afternoon here, and almost all polar prop was
gone by about 2230z. The exception was the Asian opening on 15, which didn't
really start here until about 0200z (I could hear 5's working stuff at Mach 3
that I couldn't hear a peep out of). Signals were weak, but they were audible,
and some crucial mults were worked. With JA's coming in on the higher bands in
the afternoon, they suffered the fate of the flare and I actually worked as
many EU as Asians. Strange.
The W's were the savior in this contest. Without US there would have been
nothing to do here. The W1AW/7 and NU1AW/9 operations were very easy to work
here. NU1AW/9 (at W0AIH's place?) was ridiculously loud on 10m all day here.
Very good job, guys.
Pretty easy on the household to run a CW only 24 hour contest. Glad the
contest wasn't today! See you in the CW sprint!
